Star Trek's original Klingons lacked 1 big thing.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT There was one major difference between how the Klingons were portrayed in Star Trek: The Original Series compared to Star Trek: The Next Generation and it wasn't their lack of forehead bumps. The design of the Klingons was changed for Star Trek: The Motion Picture when makeup artist Fred Phillips suggested using the budget to create a more alien version.
Star Trek's Original Klingons Had No Honor In the 1968 book The Making of Star Trek, there is a chapter devoted to Starfleet's most notable enemies. In the section for the Klingons, they are described as shrewd and deceitful. "Cruelty is something admirable; honor is a despicable trait." This is a very different description of the Klingons compared to the ones that are introduced in Star Trek: The Next Generation whose society is heavily focused on honor.
