Spielberg's '70s sci-fi horror movie Night Skies was never filmed, but the canceled project inadvertently created two unrelated classic movies.
Director Steven Spielberg’s unmade movie Night Skies may never have happened, but the canceled project did spawn two separate movies that are both considered classics decades later. Steven Spielberg was on a hot streak in the late ‘70s. The outsized success of 1975's Jaws had defined the term blockbuster while his 1977 follow-up, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, proved that Spielberg wasn’t a one-trick pony.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Despite this, one great Steven Spielberg sci-fi horror movie went unmade. Columbia wanted a sequel to Close Encounters of the Third Kind which prompted Spielberg to come up with Night Skies, a spooky story of a family besieged by small, gremlin-esque alien invaders. Night Skies never happened, but the development of the unmade movie ended up inspiring two famous Spielberg projects that followed soon after.
Steven Spielberg's Scrapped Night Skies Movie Heavily Inspired Poltergeist & E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial Poltergeist and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial were both inspired by Night Skies, with E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial turning one Nights Skies subplot into its entire story. ET’s original script evolved from Spielberg’s unmade horror movie as the director found himself less interested in the gory action of Night Skies and more invested in its poignant central relationship.
Poltergeist came about when Spielberg sought out The Texas Chain Saw Massacre director to work on Night Skies. Hooper didn’t care for the story’s sci-fi aspects but liked the idea of a family terrorized by forces that they could neither understand nor control. Spielberg then tapped Stephen King to write Poltergeist, but the author was busy with other projects and was unable to collaborate with him as a result.
Why Night Skies' Legacy Still Lives On Poltergeist and E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial were both incredibly popular, with Poltergeist spawning a franchise and an eventual remake in 2015. Not to be outdone, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial became the highest-grossing movie of all time before Spielberg broke his own record with 1993's Jurassic Park.
