He plans to pack his father’s special putter with the wood shaft and drive to San Antonio from his home in Davie, Fla., to take in the tournament and to play a round of golf at Brackenridge, where his father made history 100 years ago.
He also at one time reportedly held the record for longest drive — 325 yards, “no small feat considering the technology of the day,” his son said.Bill’s journey of discovery took a while to gain momentum. Bob MacDonald died in 1960 at age 75. Bill was just 15 at the time and after the death of his father, he didn’t pick up a golf club for 25 years.
The legendary A.W. Tillinghast course opened in 1916 as the first 18-hole municipal course in Texas and first with grass greens. The two-day event came down to Walker, 31, who started the afternoon with a one-shot lead, needing about a 6-foot putt on the final hole to tie. He missed by inches. In his book, “It’s Been A Journey — The True Story of the Oldest Golf Tournament in Texas,” author Kevin Robbins described Bob MacDonald as almost larger than life.
MacDonald won the Metropolitan Open in 1921 and 1923, had three top 10 finishes in the U.S. Open and tied for third in the 1919 PGA Championship.“You’re probably looking at the happiest man in America,” MacDonald said upon receiving his first-place prize money.
