As the Oakland teachers' strike enters its second week, many wonder if it will end before the school year ends on May 25.

As Oakland teachers were on strike for the seventh day, some parents crossed the picket lines to send their kids to school. Meanwhile, state Superintendent Tony Thurmond said he does not think the strike will extend beyond the end of the school year.

The district's 3,000 teachers, counselors, psychologists, nurses and educators returned to picket lines this morning at Oakland schools. This morning at Joaquin Miller Elementary School, a group of parents gathered across the street to cross the picket line together, and escort their kids to campus. Brown said she worries prolonged and frequent strikes put the district's financial future at long-term risk.

The union and the school district continue to negotiate issues like increased pay for educators, although exactly how that extra pay would be distributed is still being discussed. So are other issues, like increasing teacher preparation time, giving extra resources to schools where Black students are 40% of the student body, and giving teachers more decision-making power about how schools are run by creating what are called "Community Schools".

But a predicted victory by the allies of Thaksin Shinawatra, whose ouster by coup 17 years ago plunged the country into prolonged instability, has caused concern for an unhindered democratic transition. Dissatisfaction with incumbent Prayuth Chan-ocha is high. But weariness and even anger at the military’s habitual interference in politics is a major factor. The favored prime minister candidate appears to be Thaksin’s daughter, Paetongtarn Shinawatra. But the final choice for who leads the next government may rest with senators appointed under military rule.
