The founder of Illumination Entertainment reveals that the company is in deep development on Sing 3, a new film in the animated franchise.
A third Sing movie is currently in development. The franchise began in 2016 with Sing, an animated jukebox musical that followed an enterprising anthropomorphic koala named Buster Moon who attempts to revive his struggling theater by mounting a singing competition. The original film was a huge success, earning $634 million at the global box office, but its 2021 sequel turned in a more subdued gross of $408 million despite an increased budget.
[We're] deep into development [on Sing 3.] It will involve characters from the original cast, but it will take us into a new world. We don’t just look at box office. We gauge the audience response in different ways. The streaming success of Sing 2 signals that fans want to stay in this world with these characters.
