Shannon Sanders’s collection ‘Company’ chronicles irritating and theatrical encounters with audacious friends, family members and lovers
I recently started reading intergenerational family sagas that span space and time — books that speak to characters alternating between brackish ancestral traditions and those torn apart by sudden migration, like Maryse Condé’s “Segu,” Gabriel García Márquez’s “One Hundred Years of SolitudeMaxine Hong Kingston’s “The Woman Warrior” and Sarah Broom’s “The Yellow House.
Some characters are glib, and some are stern, but a few seem more invested in their perpetual alarm toward one another. When several university-age cousins are forced to attend their aunt Cassandra’s party celebrating her promotion to a provost position at an unnamed university, they observe, taunt and swing cracks at one another.
Families have a way of judging one’s life decisions without provocation or aspiration. In the story “Dragonflies,” Sanders focuses on the funeral of Grandma Lou, a matriarch whose death led to a reconfiguring of the family’s hierarchy.
