Through the efforts of their investigators over the past year, SGI has prevented $6 million in fraudulent claims.
As such SGI has published accounts of some of the slick, and not so slick, ways people have tried to defraud the Crown corporation in the last calendar year.
In a news release, the insurance provider said “insurance is there when you need it, but some people try to get it even when they don’t,” as is made evident by some of the schemes and ploys people have used to try and scam SGI out of insurance money. According to the Crown, its Special Investigation Unit caught hundreds of people trying to commit fraud last year.
“This important work helps keep insurance rates low for honest customers,” said SGI in a release, adding that the work done by the SIU saved the company approximately $6 million.SGI recounts one case where “Jacob” and “Deb” — not their real names — happened to collide while driving. According to the claim Jacob was broadsided by Deb who blew through a stop sign. They claimed not to know each other but that claim and the nature of the accident were proven to be false.
