Several states issued alerts this week due to West Nile virus after counties reported their first cases while Kanas put nearly the entire state in the high risk category.
Dekalb County's board said crews are applying larvicide, an insecticide that targets the larval stage life of a mosquito, in low-lying areas and storms drains.Meanwhile, the Kansas Department of Health has, meaning residents have high odds of being bitten by an infected mosquito.
"We're right in the middle of our peak timeframe for WNV transmission here in Kansas, and with more widespread virus activity this year than in the previous several years, it's important to take mosquito bite prevention measures to protect yourself, your family, and livestock against all mosquito-borne illnesses," Dr. Erin Petro, the state's public health veterinarian, said in a statement.
