The legislation ensures “children are protected in their innocence and their development,” Sen. Bryan Hughes, R-Mineola, who authored the bill, said during Tuesday’s debate.
Under Hughes’ proposal, a health advisory council could choose to abandon any sex education elective taught at high schools and prevent school district employees from discussing teenage pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases, dating violence and menstruation with students, Eckhardt said on Tuesday.
Trustees across the state would be authorized to adopt a policy allowing their local school health advisory council, known as SHAC, to determine when school district employees are able to discuss topics related to human sexuality with students and when campuses can host an extracurricular event related to such matters, according to the bill.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton or a district or county attorney could sue any school district that violates the directives.
