The Orange Avenue campus combines Central Elementary and Wilson Middle and is named after the late Rev. George Walker Smith, a local civil rights icon
Smith was a church leader, the first African-American elected to office in city history, and a civic force whose Catfish Club lunches were a weekly gathering spot for anyone interested in civic affairsThe new campus has classrooms, play areas and other spaces designed to accommodate programs that had been long-running at Central, including employee child care, preschool, after-school enrichment and a Spanish biliteracy program.
The campus buildings have many signature features of San Diego Unified’s school renovations, including high ceilings and large windows to let in natural light, brightly colored doors and walls, flexible chairs, desks that double as whiteboards so students can drill math problems and other class work, and classroom walls that double as glass doors that open to allow for outdoor learning.
