Shaphat Outreach connects teens and adults with resources to help them leave behind gang life
Shaphat Outreach, a community-based group that works to stop shootings among gangs in San Diego, was recently awarded a $100,000 grant.
Everytown awarded a total of $2.35 million to 35 community-based violence-intervention groups across the U.S. The grants, announced this week, are important because community-based violence intervention groups often struggle to access funding, according to Everytown.Shaphat Outreach connects teens and adults with services, such as cognitive behavioral therapy, to help them leave behind gang life.
He said the funds will help pay for a lease for a new office, curriculum for a journaling program and more. Assemblymember David Alvarez, who represents such areas as Barrio Logan, City Heights and Otay Mesa, applauded the grant.
