I heard from a few readers this week about an over-the-air broadcast recording option I have not yet mentioned in my cord-cutting columns. The readers...

They don’t have onboard storage. Instead, they have a USB 3 port for you to add your own storage. Most of the boxes have one tuner, so you can record one show at a time, but you can’t watch another show while you are recording. The Aluratek has two tuners, which is probably why it costs $50 instead of $30, like the others. You also won’t see a nice-looking guide grid. The shows are listed by channel and can be clunky to navigate.

You can press a button on the remote to start a recording of the current show, or you can schedule a channel and time to record in the future . You can set one-time recordings or other intervals like once a week or every day, but there is no way to set up a season pass. The recordings are also a bit difficult to decipher, as they are listed by day/time and channel, not by the name of the show.Attach an antenna to the box’s coax jack and connect the box to your TV with an HDMI cable.

The box should initiate a scan for channels. You use the remote that came with the box instead of your TV remote to change channels. The main thing these boxes have going for them is price. They are cheap, and they have no ongoing subscription costs for guide data. They are also a good way to get local channels to a projector, if you have one in your home theater.

I don’t recommend these, but I present them as an option. I personally use a TiVo to record over-the-air shows at my house.

After killings, calls to protect S. Africa's whistleblowersAfter killings, calls to protect S. Africa's whistleblowersAnti-corruption groups in South Africa have called for more protection of whistleblowers following recent killings that bore the hallmarks of professional hits. A specialist accountant working on a high-profile corruption case was killed along with his son by unknown gunmen as they drove along a highway in March. A government health department employee who warned of illegal dealings worth nearly $50 million was shot 12 times in the driveway of her home in what has been described as an assassination in 2021. The slayings and other cases have fueled outrage over widespread graft linked to government contracts, which has plagued Africa’s most developed economy for years but appears to continue unabated.
