The most prolific scorer in the Class 5A state girls basketball tournament? The 6-foot-3 senior Valor Christian center dropped 28 points on Thursday night to lift the Eagles to the Class 5A title game. No. 1 Valor overcame an early deficit to roll 65-49 over No. 5 Arapahoe inside the Denver Coliseum.
The defending 5A champion Eagles will play for a repeat state title Saturday. Valor faces Grandview to provide a marquee matchup in the title game — Beers, an Oregon State signee, against Grandview center Lauren Betts, a Stanford signee.“I’m looking forward to it so much. Lauren Betts has been my biggest competitor since day one and seventh grade when we started,” Beers said. “I’ve loved getting to play against her. It’s made me better, and hopefully, I’ve made her better.
But Valor wasn’t guaranteed a spot in the title game. Arapahoe built a 15-13 lead after the first quarter on Thursday night. The Warriors were effective breaking Valor’s press with seamless transition offense and did well protecting the paint with three early blocks. Suddenly, Arapahoe went up by seven points behind the roar of a strong student section. The Warriors were led by guard Sydney White, who finished with 15 points, five rebounds and three assists. Senior center Sam Crispe, a Boston University signee, added 13 points and four blocks.Valor went on an 11-0 run to lead 28-26 at halftime.
“Reagan is such a team player in that she’s willing to do whatever it takes to be successful,” Valor coach Jessika Caldwell said. “Because she has such a big post presence, what people don’t realize is her ability to pass and find the open man out of the double and triple teams that she’s experienced all season. She’s even taken up the opportunity to take the ball down the floor against a press.
