Goalie Alex Shields stops goals, and scores one, in regional championship win
Although it’s a game — don’t say ‘just a game’ — Steele Canyon goalie Alex Shields treats every soccer contest like a final exam.
Give Shields an A+ after he led the Cougars to the Southern California Regional Division IV championship last weekend against Los Angeles King/Drew, first making a diving save in the third round of penalty kicks, then scoring on his own shot in the fourth round.Sophomore Erik Rosales would make it a perfect 5-for-5 on PKs for Steele Canyon, delivering the 5-4 victory.
“It took me a couple of weeks at the start of the season to get used to the new guys, but we were very confident by the playoffs.” “The San Ysidro playoff game a year ago was almost exactly like . I managed to get a late goal and then we won in penalty kicks to advance to the finals.”Trailing 1-0 in the waning seconds, Shields came out of the net and from 60 yards out, launched what was supposed to be a pass to his teammate in the box. Instead, the goalie came out too far and the ball bounced over his head and into the net.The magic didn’t last, however, as the Cougars lost 1-0 to Olympian in the title game.
On to the SoCal Division IV playoffs where the Cougars were seeded second. First it was a 2-1 victory over a very disciplined Quartz Hill team and then a 2-1 triumph over Crawford, which Shields said played much faster and was more dangerous than Quartz Hill.
