The city of Phoenix, Arizona, is planning to send roughly 600 unclaimed firearms to Ukraine.
The firearms will be given to the National Police of Ukraine, according to the agenda of a Phoenix city council meeting. The firearms include 9mm, 45mm, 39mm, and 12 gauge guns and shotguns. They were taken into the city's possession after a period of 30 days unclaimed per the city's policy. They will be transferred to Ukraine through the Pennsylvania-based logistics company Gruelle in a two-year contract.
“It’s a normal process for us, with these unclaimed weapons, to move them around to other law enforcement agencies,” Phoenix spokesman Dan Wilson said, according to the Arizona Mirror. “And so, the only difference here is that the law enforcement agency is not a domestic law enforcement agency, it’s one outside the country.
“We believe, based on the understanding of the people in the positions currently, that it has never happened before,” he added. “But we are not 100% sure. The research it would take to confirm that would be lengthy. But based on the people who have been with the department a long time, we believe this is the first time.
Some GOP lawmakers objected to the deal on the grounds that the weapons should be sold, rather than donated.
