Padres come back to tie game in seventh, immediately lose lead and can't capitalize on final opportunity
On the day after Bob Melvin let his players know more urgency was required, the Padres had the task of walking into Dodger Stadium and playing their nemesis. They would not win, because after the Padres tied the game in the top of the seventh, Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman hit successive one-out home runs in the bottom of the inning.
Said Xander Boagerts: “We just have to play better. It’s time. You can’t keep saying this and that. You have to go out there and do it. There’s a lot of us that haven’t been to do what we want to, including myself, especially these last few weeks. It will turn around. … We know we’re cable of doing better. Much better.”
Before Bogaerts’ two-out double, a walk by Matt Carpenter and Kim’s line drive that short-hopped the wall in left field, it seemed the talk from Melvin would show virtually no immediate tangible dividend.
