A hit and run on 700 South State Street that left one woman dead on Wednesday evening marks the 19th traffic related death in Salt Lake City in 2023.
The rate of hit and runs in the last two weeks were called “alarming” by Police Chief Mike Brown in a written statement to KUTV news, who begged for the responsible party to come forward. Wood says it’s because UDOT is focused on maintaining growing vehicle traffic, not pedestrian safety. “Most of it has to do with drivers not paying attention, pedestrians not paying attention,” said Shaw, “if we can identify an issue, we act accordingly, but a lot of times these incidents are isolated incidents.”UDOT’s take on the lack of patterns is the opposite of what Sweet Streets has to say about the incidents being linked to poor road structure.
“If there is something we can do to make a difference, then we do it,” said Shaw, adding that UDOT has contributed to the lowered pedestrian fatality rates across Utah, which he says are the lowest in a decade. “That’s not really to pat our back or anything, but I think that’s important information to have out there.”
