Salinas is a board member at the Grossmont Union High School District Board and a professor emeritus at San Diego Community College District and lives in La Mesa.
This issue comes down to finding a line between what society and/or the government deems right or necessary and what families, who may disagree, want.I feel that it is my duty as an elected official to lift their voices up and share the diligent work that they have done. Students conducted research into the two programs and found that San Diego Youth Services was the better and safer option for them.
How did we get here? The decision was made to terminate San Diego Youth Services’ contract on the basis of one public comment that was backed by no evidence or investigation; with a 3-1 vote and one absentee, the board abruptly ended services for students with no regard for their well-being. When pushed to actually investigate the situation before canceling services, would not entertain the idea. This breakdown in procedure is deeply troubling.
The majority who voted to remove San Diego Youth Services in favor of Wellness Together is more inclined to provide no service for any students than it is willing to provide services for all students. Our parents are also devastated and concerned. One parent wrote, “Teen suicide is at the highest recorded level in the United States . The termination of this contract is inexcusable.” Another parent told how her child was saved by therapists on campus.was called to figure out a solution.
But still they refused to reinstate San Diego Youth Services or at least open up the topic for further discussion by agendizing it for discussion at a future meeting. This approach enables the strategic adoption of unpopular decisions, silences our students, and, most importantly, does not allow redress for the grievances of our parents, teachers and our community.
