Star Wars' most tragic character is a Stormtrooper.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT With deadly bounty hunters, sinister Sith, and spectacular Jedi prominently featured in nearly every addition to Star Wars lore, it seems impossible that a character as seemingly trivial as a common Stormtrooper would have one of the most tragic stories to date. But, upon reading one Star Wars tale in particular, it immediately becomes clear how this could be the case.
In Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope, Darth Vader and his squadron of Stormtroopers board Princess Leia’s Rebel ship in search of the stolen Death Star plans. As soon as the Stormtroopers burst through the door, they immediately dominate the Rebel soldiers, clearing the way for the insidious Darth Vader.
Princess Leia’s Stormtrooper Victim Is Star Wars’ Most Tragic Character In the Star Wars Tales #10 story titled “Trooper” by Garth Ennis and John McCrea, readers get the full backstory on the Stormtrooper who Leia killed in Episode IV. The nameless imperial citizen was raised on a planet with a harsh environment and an even harsher outlook on life. He was taught that life was simply a period of time between birth and death, nothing more nothing less.
While the broad-stroke breakdown of this Trooper’s life is tragic, none of it compares to his internal monologue during his final moments alive. Dreading being picked as the one forced to charge into the Rebel ship first , he told himself before his last fateful mission that he’d actually defect to the Rebellion should he make it out alive. He thought about a former Imperial pilot who did just that, and he had it in his mind that he could be just like them.
In truth, this Stormtrooper didn’t deserve the happy ending he so desperately craved. He committed atrocities not just in the name of the Empire, but in the name of his own selfishness. He wanted to be free from his world, and he didn’t care how many other worlds he had to burn to maintain that freedom. However, he did exhibit true remorse at the end, but by then, it was already too late, making this Stormtrooper one of Star Wars’ most tragic characters.
