Helicopters will be dropping water on the West Milford fire throughout the day, the mayor said.
The blaze is now 40% contained, the New Jersey Forest Fire Service said in a Thursday afternoon update.on Wednesday evening, it was 40% contained shortly after 3 p.m., the state Forest Fire Service said. The fire was not at all contained at about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
The state Forest Fire Service said no structures are threatened. But, West Milford Mayor Michele Dale said again Thursday that homes on Blakely Lane off Echo Lake are at risk and firefighters are covering residences there. Helicopters are also dropping water on the fire, according to John Cecil, an assistant commissioner from the state Department of Environmental Protection.
The state Forest Fire Service said it’s prepared for wildfires around this time of year, with April being the peak season.
