After giving birth to her son, Elliott, photographer Adriana Delgado wanted to capture the beauty of motherhood. Here are portraits of San Diego mothers as seen through Delgado's lens.

Mother’s Day will be celebrated in Mexico on Wednesday and in the U.S. on Sunday, so we’re recognizing mothers all week long with a series of essays and illustrations of flowers.Krohn, 39, is a single mother of 4-year-old identical twins, Alice and Lyra. A resident of Imperial Beach, she is a freelance photographer who specializes in capturing images of families. Experiencing motherhood pushed her creativity to become a professional photographer. She now runs her own photography business.

“Women are expected to work as if they aren’t moms and be moms as if they don’t work. Because when I’m with her, I never want her to think I’m too busy for her.” “We are given an opportunity to re-learn curiosity, creativity and pure joy from our children when we become parents. They are our greatest teachers, and it’s a beautiful thing.”French, 24, moved to San Diego from Los Angeles at 18 when she got accepted to the University of California San Diego. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in women’s health research at UCSD, working part-time as a teaching assistant and freelancing as a makeup artist.

Yunis said she worked a variety of jobs around Jordan and Lebanon as she saved money to hire a lawyer who could help her get custody of Dawoud. She succeeded in 2016, and since 2018, they’ve lived in San Diego’s Serra Mesa neighborhood. “I would not be the same person if I was not a mom. I would not be this kind. I would not be this generous. I would not have so much fire, I have so much fire. Like, nothing can stand in my way as a mom. And I know that this is thanks to being a mom. I feel like I am seriously, truly unstoppable.”For Hui, being a mother to 2-year-old Addie and 4-year-old Miles is all about the simple things.

“I think that nobody speaks the truth about motherhood,” says Fernandez, 45, whose daughter, Maya, is 7. “Nobody speaks the truth about how isolating it can be. About how the distribution of responsibilities solely falls on the women’s shoulders. Nobody talks about the toll it takes on your body, your pelvic floor, your back, your head and your emotions.
