Lee says one of her top priorities as she takes office is public safety. 'I think anybody that lives in the city understands that: Safety, safety, safety.'
on Monday, as the council voted unanimously to confirm her as the new alderman for the 11th Ward.
Lee is the first woman and first Asian American to represent the 11th Ward, the longtime power base of the Daley family, which is all but certain to become the city's first Asian American majority ward when the ongoing process to redraw the city's ward maps is completed. "One of the biggest lessons that I learned from that experience was the importance of taking responsibility for one's actions," Lee said."We're all human beings, and sometimes mistakes are made, and the one thing that we can do … the best thing that we can do is take responsibility and move forward."
"Enjoy your day. This will be the last day that you're going to be happy on this floor," said Ald. Roberto Maldonado , quoting former Congressman Luis Gutierrez, who served on the Council for six years in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
