Deshaun Watson was not indicted by a grand jury Mach 11, but he still faces civil lawsuits accusing him of sexual misconduct.CLEVELAND, Ohio— A national organization that advocates for victims of sexual assault on Tuesday criticized the Cleveland Browns’ trade for quarterback Deshaun Watson and the statement released Sunday by team owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam.
“At present, it strains credulity to believe that the Cleveland Browns and the NFL as a whole are in anyway concerned about issues of sexual violent and exploitation when we witness your franchise choose to promote and elevate an alleged, serial sexual exploiter,” the letter, signed by the organization’s president Patrick Trueman and CEO Dawn Hawkins, said.
“We lament that never in history has such a contract been extended to an individual with such a highly questionable track record of sexual misconduct,” the letter said., which called the 22 lawsuits “some legal proceedings,” and the fact the women’s attorney said the Browns never reached out to any of the women during their vetting process prior to the trade.
The National Center on Sexual Exploitation also posed a series of questions to the Browns, including if the Browns had any system or policy to protect women against sexual abuse, if they made it a condition of Watson’s employment to refrain from visiting massage parlors or hiring massage therapists, if the Browns will allow him to have one-on-one interactions with female employees and if they will suspend him if any judgements are rendered against him in the civil cases.
