Chatham High School will move the start of the school day from 7:40 a.m. to 8:20 a.m.

Classes at the high school currently start at 7:40 a.m. but will begin at 8:20 a.m. for the 2022-2023 school year.last week of scheduling changes that also include later starts in pre-kindergarten through 5th grade.“Based on the data we have, the majority of our middle school students are getting enough sleep, but that number steeply declines as they move through the grades,” LaSusa told NJ Advance Media on Monday.

Sponsors of the bill in the New Jersey Legislature, including Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin, D-Middlesex, last week cited the impact of theLaSusa, in a presentation to the school board in February, said a Chatham High School survey found that less than 1 in 5 students reported getting at least 8 hours of sleep per night. That’s the minimum recommended sleep time for adolescents, according to the National Sleep Foundation and the American Academy of Pediatrics.

“Those folks who say, well, if you start the day an hour later, kids just stay up an hour later and they don’t sleep any more — that’s nonsense. That’s not true,” LaSusa told the board. Classes at Chatham High School will end at 3 p.m. starting in September. Students currently are dismissed at 2:35 p.m.
