Montgomery County authorities charged a 21-year-old with first-degree murder after saying her story about what happened to her 20-year-old boyfriend fell apart.

September 12, 2023 at 9:00 a.m. EDTHaving just driven her mortally wounded boyfriend to a Maryland hospital, Jennifer Espinoza Orellana weighed what to do next.

Her exact version of the events is not clear, but at one point she told detectives that Zavala Marquez choked or tried to choke her, according to court records. Detectives couldn’t find any signs of injury, though, and spelled out at least four other inconsistencies in her account, according to a signed affidavit they submitted to court. It was 5:30 a.m. Sunday, the affidavit states, that a blue Honda Civic pulled up outside Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center in Rockville.

Police quickly set up surveillance around her home. They saw her arrive at 8:15 a.m., go inside, come out in a different outfit, get into a different car, and head back to the hospital, according to court records. Detectives caught up with her there. She said she couldn’t drive the Honda, according to court records, because she’d rear-ended another car while leaving the hospital earlier.

In her revised telling, as described by detectives, on Saturday night or into Sunday morning, Espinoza Orellana, Zavala Marquez and a friend were at her home — with at least some of the parties drinking alcohol. At some point, an altercation developed between Espinoza Orellana stated Zavala Marquez.
