It’s called polymer polybutylene succinate and is commonly found in mulching films, compostable bags and catering packaging. The researchers were able to pinpoint the enzyme responsible for degrading PBS in a specific strain of bacteria and they dubbed it PBSase. They then went one step further inserting this enzyme into the common marine bacterium Escherichia coli to make it more adept at biodegrading materials.
Although these microorganisms that break down plastic show promise, obstacles still need to be resolved. Natural bacteria degrade plastic at a rather slow rate, which may not be fast enough to keep up with the rate of plastic pollution.
