The incident happened as Hurricane Lee continues to kick up surf
Around 4:30 p.m., lifeguards at the 21st Avenue beach spotted three swimmers floundering in the surf about 80 yards off the shoreline. Using rescue buoys, they dashed into the surf and brought two men and a woman safely to shore, said James Sawyer, an EMT and member of the North Wildwood Beach Patrol who was at the scene.
Sawyer said the three swimmers were conscious when they were brought ashore and then checked out by EMTs as an ambulance arrived. None appeared to be in a life-threatening condition, Sawyer said, but as a precaution, the female was taken by ambulance to a local hospital to get checked out. North Wildwood police confirmed that three people at 21st Avenue beach and that one swimmer were taken to Cape May Regional Medical Center. Police would not provide further details.
Hurricane Lee has been kicking up the surf for days as it heads north through the Atlantic Ocean. Waves as high as eight feet were expected on the Jersey Shore, which delighted surfers but made swimming dangerous. Red flags were posted on beaches all along the Jersey Shore Saturday, advising swimmers to stay out of the water.
“As compared to yesterday, it was a lot calmer” on Saturday, Sawyer said. “But there were still rip currents and they got caught in one.”
