Former Paramount exec Don Granger reveals that Keanu Reeves' Speed was nearly made as a sequel to the action franchise, Beverly Hills Cop.
Before it continued Keanu Reeves' rise to stardom in the action genre, a former Paramount exec reveals that Speed was nearly made as a sequel to the Beverly Hills Cop franchise. The 1994 movie starred Reeves as an LAPD bomb disposal officer who races through the city on a bus wired with a bomb set to explode if it drops below 50 miles per hour.
While appearing on the latest episode of the 50 MPH Podcast, former Paramount exec Don Granger looked back on the long road to bringing Speed to life on screen. In recalling the final days of the movie's development at the studio, Granger revealed that he pitched the project as a Beverly Hills Cop sequel, only for the other execs to shut down the idea rather quickly.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT I really wanted to try to mount the movie, and my last-ditch effort was I pitched it at our chairman’s lunch as a possible script for Beverly Hills Cop 3. I got about 15 minutes of traction before it was dismissed, because that was back when the mandate was to find a Beverly Hills Cop 3, so I was like, ‘Let’s put Axel Foley on the bus.’ It was a Hail Mary, man.
Why Speed Wouldn't Have Worked As A Beverly Hills Cop Sequel While the concept of a bus set to explode if going slower than 50 miles per hour may sound humorous on paper, when put in the right hands, it can be a properly tense adventure.
Given the more comedic-skewing nature of the Beverly Hills Cop franchise, morphing the idea behind Speed into a Murphy-led sequel would not only ruin its potential tension, but also the formula that made the first two action comedies a success. Much of the comedy from the Beverly Hills Cop movies stemmed from the fish-out-of-water dynamic for Axel, with Murphy delivering a very juxtaposed performance to the more uptight people living in the California city.
