San Francisco’s favorite sea lions are getting larger, a finding that has surprised scientists.
California sea lions will eat almost anything, which scientists say has partially contributed to the species’s population growth in recent decades.San Francisco’s favorite blubbery pinnipeds are getting larger, according to a new study’s findings, which scientists are calling “very unexpected.”, has increased its body size over the last 50 years, according to a paper published by UC Santa Cruz scientists this week.
Since hunting sea lions became a federal crime in 1972, the mammal’s population has tripled. Typically, a population increase in any animal results in a reduction in body size, as competition for food increases. This has been seen in polar bears, harbor seals and many other species, Valenzuela-Toro said. But sea lions — or the male ones, at least — are only getting bigger as the species continues to thrive.
By analyzing bone samples for clues about where, and what, the mammals were eating, researchers concluded that sea lions are finding food farther off the California coast and deeper in the ocean, in addition to diversifying their diets. Basically, California sea lions will eat anything, anywhere. This unfussy diet means that when some prey is sparse, sea lions can compensate with another snack, which partially explains the species’s spectacular growth in population in recent decades.Patricia Chang/Special to SFGATE
