In 1913, a culture war broke out over an exhibition of works by Picasso, Duchamp and other Europeans at the Art Institute of Chicago.

The Cubist room at the International Exhibition of Modern Art at the Art Institute of Chicago on March 24 through April 16, 1913. The show was also known as the"Armory Show."

But she also conceded: “Their art, if it is art, would seem to be in an experimental stage and time alone can determine if it will amount to anything.” Before the Armory Show came to Chicago in 1913, it was on display in New York. The Chicago Tribune wrote, “Samples of Freak Art at “Insurgent” Exhibit in New York” on Feb. 17, 1913. By March, the show would be at the Art Institute of Chicago where it was the talk of the town.

The story tried to soften such reactions with some words from Walt Kuhn, secretary of the Association of American Painters and Sculptors: “It is not necessary to depict a thing exactly to make a person see what is intended. It makes people think and therefore is a triumph.”Marcel Duchamp created"Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2" in 1912. It was on display at the Art Institute of Chicago by 1913, showcasing the new style of modern art.
