Mat Recalls His Past Lives In The Wheel Of Time’s History What occurred between Mat and the Heroes wasn’t detailed within the episode, itself, but an explanation can be found in the events of the previous episode. Apparently, the tea Ishamael gave Mat did exactly what he said it would. Ishamael claimed Mat would recall his “past lives.” This refers to reincarnation, which is a key part of the lore. Some time after a person dies, their soul can be spun out of the Wheel and back into the Pattern.
By drinking Ishamael’s tea, Mat was able to acquire the memories of the other lives he’s led in the Pattern. Not only that, but he crossed paths with heroes as famous as Artur Hawkwing. As surprising as this may be, it actually makes sense, considering that in the books, many of the memories he gained were from accomplished military leaders. From the looks of things, the same is true of his TV counterpart.

In the books, having his memories unlocked by the mysterious race known as the Aelfinn in The Shadow Rising leads to Mat becoming an even bigger ally in the fight to stop the Dark One.
