The drug, called cabozantinib, not only disrupts the growth signals of the cancer cells but also cuts off their blood supply, making it harder for them to survive and spread.

A new drug that attacks cancer cells from two fronts has shown promising results in a clinical trial for patients with advanced neuroendocrine tumors, a study by Dana-Farber Cancer InstituteThe drug, called cabozantinib, not only disrupts the growth signals of the cancer cells but also cuts off their blood supply, making it harder for them to survive and spread.

The trial's primary outcome was progression-free survival – the length of time that patients lived without their disease worsening. The results showed that cabozantinib significantly improved PFS for both groups of patients. Cabozantinib extended PFS to 8.3 months from 3.2 months with a placebo for patients with extra-pancreatic tumors. For patients with pancreatic tumors, cabozantinib increased PFS to 11.4 months from 3.0 months with a placebo.
