Rutgers running back Samuel Brown V takes the handoff from Scarlet Knights quarterback Gavin Wimsatt during the second quarter against Wagner, Saturday, Sept. 30 2023, in Piscataway, N.J.A dark shadow streaks across her Black face. He underwent surgery to repair his left foot. It took months of rehab to get back into football shape then he sufferedthat delayed his return even more. It’s been a frustrating year for the sophomore, but he hopes to contribute to a backfield that has been a strength of the Scarlet Knights as the team enters the thick of its Big Ten season with a 4-1 record, its best start since 2014.Above are copies of two of the paintings by Samuel J. In 1934, Brown created “The Lynching”. Although it’s an abstract painting, it’s Brown’s most direct statement piece of his career. As the name suggests, a Black man dangles from a tree branch while hundreds of onlookers direct their gaze upward. A shadowy grim reaper appears next to a long ladder while the lyncher makes his way down the rungs. The painting takes the viewer hundreds of feet in the air, although the man being lynched jumps out in the forefront from an abstract perspective.

Coincidentally, Mialsha Brown, mother of the Rutgers running back, was a member of Jack and Jill before meeting her husband. She now works as a school counselor at Camden High School. “He can paint or draw whatever comes to his mind,” he said. “I know football takes up a lot of his time, but it’s something to keep him interested.”Injured Rutgers running back Samuel Brown V on the sideline during the the Scarlet-White Spring game, Saturday, April 29, 2023 in Piscataway, N.J.The Rutgers running back is only an underclassmen.
