Homer Elementary School District 33C will use an outside service to screen job candidates’ social media and online history, an action taken a month after a newly hired teacher was fired after his past Facebook posts surfaced. The school board voted Tuesday to use Peopletrail, a Utah-based company that uses both artificial intelligence and human expertise, to conduct background screenings.Michael Portwood, assistant superintendent of human resources, said having a third-party vendor review a candidates’ social media and digital history provides increased safety and mitigates the risk of discrimination.

“Quite a few businesses employ this practice,” Portwood said. “I feel like education is behind in this regard.”Peopletrail would view at a job candidates’ digital footprint and look for content such as drug-related images, explicit images, hate speech, insults, bullying, obscenity, self-harm, sexual impropriety, terrorism and violence, Portwood said. The company would provide a report to district administration with an overall score based on the flagged content.

The Homer Elementary School District 33C Board met in a special meeting Aug. 20, 2023. Afterward, the board fired a teacher who had violent messages posted on social media.
