Girls wrestling in Pennsylvania is on the verge of its first officially sanctioned season in 2023-’24 with visible spikes in overall participation in the sport, but especially in the state’s talent level.
Growth has been exponential, even before the PIAA lifted the red tape and approved the state’s first official championship event, so the feeling around the girls wrestling community is that the future is limitless.
The arrow of Pennsylvania girls wrestling is trending way up. And amazingly, the rise of women’s wrestling at all levels is reenergizing a sport that has faced concerns about its long-term future. Now, fresh faces abound at the senior, junior, high school and youth levels and wrestling has seen its highest combined participation in 45 years.
Between now and then, much still needs to be accomplished. So, as we kick off another Girls Wrestling Week, we do it with that in mind. Of course, we’ll celebrate the achievements of Pennsylvania’s 13 state champions, but we’ll also look at what sanctioning means for the sport and the road ahead to get a championship event off the ground.
