Palo Alto’s Nelson Gifford won’t return for a fifth season as the football coach at his alma mater.
PALO ALTO — Nelson Gifford announced Tuesday that he was stepping down as football coach at Palo Alto High.
“It was time to go in a different direction,” Gifford said. “Unfortunately there wasn’t an alignment of values.”. “I still don’t know why I got moved out of the AD job,” Gifford said. “If they’re bringing in a new AD, it’s important the new AD hire a football coach to take the program in a direction they see fit.”“In the time I was here I was the only on-campus coach hired,” Gifford said. “All the other vacancies were filled by off-campus coaches. That tells you something about their prioritization of athletics.
No response had been received to an email requesting comment from Palo Alto principal Brent Kline prior to this story being posted.
