Griffith’s town government is digging deep into its ability to raise money so that it can meet legal obligations, pursue capital projects and replenish its general fund.

In fact, a general obligation bond issue not to exceed $2.5 million recently passed the Griffith Town Council.Town Council President Rick Ryfa, R-3rd, said the general obligation bond would replenish what the town paid, from its general fund, for architectural work and land acquisition for a new town hall/police station facility. When the estimated cost shot up last year beyond what town officials had estimated and could afford, the project was scrapped.

HSD is the town’s water and sewage treatment provider, and Griffith is therefore adjoined to the federal ruling relative to Hammond’s discharge into Lake Michigan. A U.S. District Court found the HSD and its customers in violation of the U.S. Clean Water Act, and now Griffith residents are feeling the financial impact of the ruling.

Accordingly, the average monthly residential bill for Griffith home and business owners increased to $39.30 on July 1. Ryfa noted a favorable 3.9% interest rate the town received for the Sanitary District bond.
