The extent of Arctic sea ice fluctuates greatly from year to year, but rising temperatures are causing a long-term reduction. At first, this drop gave grey whales extra days of access to feeding grounds. But after a while, the quality of the whales' food decreased as a result of a number of other changes brought on by Arctic warming, including modifications to currents, water temperature, and sea ice algae.
And the devastation may be even worse than currently estimated as not all dead whales wash up on the shores to be discovered by scientists.
