Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson has been advised to assert his Fifth Amendment right not to incriminate himself during Friday’s depositions related to 22 civil suits. The Harris County District Attorney’s Office will present findings Friday from a criminal investigation into Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson before a grand jury, his attorney’s office confirmed.
The hearing will be on the same day Watson must undergo depositions in connection to 22 civil lawsuits accusing him of sexual assault and harassment during various massage appointments. Eight women who sued Watson, plus two more women separate from the lawsuits, filed police complaints that triggered the Houston Police Department’s criminal investigation into Watson. Rusty Hardin, Watson’s lawyer, has twice expressed his concern that his client’s depositions under oath could provide the criminal case with evidence.Hardin asked to postpone the depositions until at least Monday. Attorney Tony Buzbee, who represents the several women in the civil litigation, declined.
Watson, 26, has denied any wrongdoing, and, depending on the verdict, the Texans may be able to trade their 2017 first-round pick to another NFL franchise. Watson has not played since issuing a trade demand following the 2020 season, before the allegations against him emerged.
