The governor is pushing to bring Republicans together on a plan that would subsidize private education for millions of Texas students.
House members began circulating initial copies of a revised voucher plan late last week, which would have extended the subsidies to both special education as well as low-income students. The plan quickly divided the GOP-led lower chamber, which has been opposed to vouchers for years.
Over the weekend, a newer version of the bill was made available, with low-income students no longer eligible. While the initial rewrite would have applied to about 4 million students, the governor estimated, the newer version would apply to about 800,000. Supporters of school voucher programs say they will introduce more competition between education options, leading to better outcomes. They have also argued that public schools have become hotbeds of progressive thought, where children are exposed to Critical Race Theory, inappropriate library books and anti-American ideas, among other complaints.Gov.
