The White House wants to weed out hidden fees in areas like airline fares, hotel stays, and event ticketing
The White House is stepping up its crackdown on companies that tack on hidden and often excessive “junk fees” that inflate the cost of travel, tickets, banking, and a range of other consumer services.
In a related move, the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau issued an advisory opinion to the financial services industry that is intended to bar banks and credit unions from imposing excessive fees on customers for obtaining basic information on their own accounts. The core of the FTC proposal is the principle that businesses should show the full price of goods and services up front.
The 161-page rule-making proposal from the FTC gives interested parties 60 days to comment. The commission said it received more than 12,000 comments on a preliminary stage of the rule-setting process, noting that “the comments generally supported a rule-making to improve pricing transparency—including requiring advertised prices to include mandatory fees— and to prohibit misrepresentations about the nature, purpose, or amount of fees.
