Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., speaks to reporters hours after he was ousted as Speaker of the House, Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2023, at the Capitol in Washington. Americans want a functioning government. We want our political parties to work together toward compromise on our most difficult issues. We want our representatives to treat the silent majority with at least as much respect as they give their donors and their primary voters.
We do not want to be ruled by the actions and words of a handful of chaos agents whose extremism will never be satisfied no matter how much power they are given. The Republican Party has placated its most extreme elements for years, elevating their voices from precinct chairs to the presidency. The problem with coddling the worst ideas and those who embrace them is that enough is never enough. When you make these sorts of deals, there is a price to pay.
and, like other GOP leaders, he has repeatedly taken the path of least resistance when it comes to confronting the dangerous, and anti-conservative, strain within his party. That includes everything from his failure to demand accountability for the attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, to his decision to cede power to the extreme flank of his caucus in exchange for the speakership.
The consequences of placating extremists are everywhere around us now. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton should not be in office today. He should have been removed based on the overwhelming evidence of corruption presented against him in his impeachment trial.Instead, all but two senators in his own party acted in bad faith and low conscience to acquit him.
It goes without saying this is possible because moderate Democrats will not join moderate Republicans in finding compromise candidates. Crossing party lines is so anathema now that it isn’t even seriously held up as a path forward.Maybe that is the silver lining. If Republicans and Democrats who still ascribe to reason and conscience are forced to set aside the demands for total party loyalty, they can create a new bridge that weakens this rotten system we have gotten ourselves into.
