Magnificent as they are, most fossils are rather monochromatic, prompting paleontologists to go to great lengths to infer what color those ancient organisms might have been.
. But given the millions of years that separate us from the lives of those ancient animals, scientists aren't entirely sure how the process of fossilization might have meddled with those chemical imprints.
"Many fossil insects show monochromatic color patterns that may provide valuable insights into ancient insect behavior and ecology," Nanjing University paleontologist Shengyu Wang and colleagues write"Whether these patterns reflect original pigmentary coloration is, however, unknown, and their formation mechanism has not been investigated."
Next, Wang and colleagues selected three present-day beetle species with simple patterning, wrapped their exoskeletons in aluminum foil, and baked them at temperatures between 200 °C and 500 °C to simulate fossilization.
