The potential loss of Zakhari Franklin shouldn't stop UTSA from seeing the positives of college football's transfer-portal era. The Roadrunners have found a way to add talent through the portal rather than lose it.
UTSA wide receiver Zakhari Franklin has offered no public comment on why he has entered the transfer portal. As of Tuesday afternoon, the best player in college football’s transfer portal was a UTSA Roadrunner. Even if Zakhari Franklin wasn’t receiving offers from every program in America, every coach from Nick Saban to Lincoln Riley probably had a staffer exploring the idea, just in case.
Sure, the upside might be hard to see at the moment. And if Franklin, a fifth-year senior who already owns every major UTSA receiving record, scores a bunch of touchdowns for a major-conference program next season, there will be a temptation to worry that teams like the Roadrunners might turn into farm clubs for the bigger, richer traditional powers.
But we have to remember, the transfer changes came hand-in-hand with rules allowing athletes to profit off their name, image and likeness . And without an NIL deal with the PM Group that UTSA quarterback Frank Harris has acknowledged is worth “six figures,” would Harris be coming back next year?
