Step aside, Halloween Ends. Sorry ‘bout ya, The Super Mario Bros Movie. There’s a new boss in town, and he’s tall, furry, and reeks of pizza. After a big weekend at the theatrical box office, Five Nights at Freddy’s—which released the same day on Peacock—has also done huge numbers for the streamer.
7 million globally this weekend—good enough to be the biggest horror movie opening of the entire year, as well as the studio’s biggest global opening ever. Stateside, it scored the second-biggest opening of all time for a movie based on a video game , as well as the biggest opening for a horror movie with a woman director. Not bad for a movie about a guy so desperate for a job he agrees to be a security guard at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria—a place where the animatronics do not come to play.
