Chicago's Signature Room at the former Hancock Center has closed. It carries big symbolic weight.

The last time one of us from the board was in the Signature Room in the iconic skyscraper formerly known as the John Hancock Center, the food was mediocre, the check eye-watering, and the fees and surcharges bordering on the criminal. Nonetheless, this was Mother’s Day and the place was packed with smiling folks, many of whom, we suspect, were stretching their hard-earned dollars for a celebration with a view befitting Mom.The restaurant business is a tough one, and eateries come and go. And so, while some are ginning up clickbait memories of the Signature Room, as if it were a goner for good, we suspect someone already is pondering a deal for its reopening. Good.
The Magnificent Mile, of which the Signature Room was a part, is hurting and needs surgical attention. Instead of making it yet harder to run a restaurant by raising labor costs to the near impossible, Mayor Brandon Johnson and his crew should understand that without such marquee draws, we start to sink. Enough already.
The Signature Room was not a place populated by elites who turned up their noses, but by regular Chicagoans hoping for the night, or maybe just the brunch, of their year.
