From the Editorial Board: King Charles III will preside over a diminished monarchy. Nonetheless, he feels like the right man for the job.
Like many terrible ideas, this one probably began with the best of intentions. As part of the coronation Saturday of King Charles III, British citizens have been encouraged by Buckingham Palace to recite a wonky kind of pledge of allegiance: “I swear that I will pay true allegiance to Your Majesty, and to your heirs and successors, according to law. So help me God.”
And you have Charles’ own complicated marital history. To global fans of the late Diana, Princess of Wales, the new Queen Camilla was a third wheel in a troubled marriage, even if most reasonable people have come both to like her and to believe the two septuagenarians are entitled now to some happiness.
Even Canada has seen diminishing support for continuing with its constitutional monarchy, despite the costs and the hassles. Many of these countries likely would remain in the Commonwealth of Nations, a group of friendly countries made up mostly of former British colonies that was beloved by the late queen. But even that group is likely to de-emphasize any Buckingham Palace leadership over time.
Even staunch republicans in countries like Australia and New Zealand knew that their chances were much better once she was gone. And now here we are. The longer the respectful distance from Elizabeth’s death, the more all bets are off.
