I have written or edited about the auto industry on and off (mostly on) since 1985, first at The Indianapolis Star then, for more than a dozen years, at Bloomberg News in Detroit, followed by almost nine years at SME Media. I've chronicled how some auto-factory towns dried up as the industry restructured; how other rural areas benefited from investment in U.S. factories by international automakers; been inside plants; saw how automakers used racing as a marketing tool and (in some cases) for dev
Toronto Star via Getty Imagesa tentative three-year agreement with Canadian union Unifor. The accord ended a strike of less than a day. That followed Ford Motor Co. last month reaching a new contract without a work stoppage.
The GM agreement still is subject to a ratification vote by union members at three facilities. If approved, Unifor will move on to negotiations with Stellantis, which includes the former Chrysler Corp. By contrast, the Detroit-based United Auto Workers is on strike against some plants of all three automakers in the U.S., with no indication of any tentative deals. It’s a different approach from the past, where the UAW would strike only one company at a time. Such walkouts would affect all the operations with union members.
Unifor has followed a traditional strategy in its talks with the Detroit Three. Preliminary negotiations with all three companies, followed by selecting one as the “target.” After reaching a new contract with the target, the union would seek similar pacts with the other two companies. The UAW, in years past, also engaged in such a strategy, known as pattern bargaining.U.S.
The Canadian union said during its talks with GM that the Detroit-based automaker was resisting the pattern established by the new Ford contract. As a result, Unifor members walked off the job early today. The tentative deal was struck by early afternoon., that GM had accepted the same basic terms as Ford. The GM pact includes hourly wage increases of about 20 percent for production workers and 25 percent for skilled trades employees, the union said.
