That’s two consecutive summer meets for where the turf meets the surf with excellent marks for entries, daily handle, attendance and equine safety.
“I think the same as last year, given the safety aspect and the product that was conducted,” Jerkens told the Southern California News Group this week. “Sometimes you go into a Del Mar summer meet and you always feel you’re going to start strong and end strong. The middle of the meet, sometimes you’re concerned, similar to last year I thought consistently we provided a strong product. That is difficult anywhere over an eight-week period.
Consider: After an unheard of 9.14 horses per race in 2022 that spurred a track-record $18.69 million in average daily handle and a total attendance of 278,702 , track management came close to duplicating those numbers this summer by averaging 8.92 horses per race. The track’s 39 stakes races averaged 8.56 horses. Those are impressive numbers when you compare them to other tracks.
“When you’re in this job, you try to look good on the big days. Everybody is looking at Del Mar on opening day, the Pacific Classic . If you look at those two cards, opening day we were like 10.9 runners a race … then Pacific Classic day we had about 10 runners per race with five stakes races and overnight races that were competitive with full fields. From that standpoint, you couldn’t really ask for anything better.
