The Killer may benefit from this odd pattern.

It’s hard to know where The Killer will stand in the ranking of David Fincher’s work, but one odd pattern in the director’s filmography hints at the film being a classic. David Fincher has one of the most distinctive and engaging styles of any filmmaker working today. After a hugely successful career as a music video director, Fincher’s first film, Alien 3 was a catalyzing mess, bogged down by script changes and studio interference.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT With The Killer, the Fincher trend will be put to the test once again. Anticipation is high for the film, which will see the director returning to crime-thriller territory after the somewhat underwhelming biopic Mank. The Killer stars Michael Fassbender as the titular assassin who finds himself involved in an international manhunt after a hit gone wrong.

Every Even-Numbered David Fincher Movie Is Great A look at David Fincher’s filmography reveals a bizarrely consistent quality trend. The even-numbered films, Se7en, Fight Club, Zodiac, The Social Network, and Gone Girl, are widely considered to be cinematic classics; the odd-numbered films, Alien 3, The Game, Panic Room, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo, and Mank, are generally perceived as good-to-middling efforts.

Like the infamous Star Trek curse, it’s a strange rule which seems to hold no logical basis. There’s no unifying factor that distinguishes Fincher’s odd-numbered films from his even-numbered ones. Mank is a vibrant interpersonal drama, just like The Social Network; Panic Room is a dark, female-led crime thriller, just like Gone Girl.

The Killer Has All The Makings Of A Classic David Fincher Film Since the even-numbers rule has no logic to it, there’s no way to be sure that Fincher’s 12th film, The Killer, will uphold it. However, the early signs are encouraging. The movie, like four of Fincher’s five bona fide masterpieces, is a crime thriller. It will be Fincher’s first film collaboration with screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker since 1995’s Se7en.
